What our members and guests say

Our Community

"We have moved eight times in our careers, and now the ninth to Colleton River Plantation. Each part of the world we’ve lived in has been special because of the friends we’ve met and shared our lives with, and who continue to be our friends. It is the first thing we say when asked why we liked this or that city; the people. And so, above all else, we sought warm, caring, interesting and lively people when looking for a retirement location.

The best clue we had that Colleton River was a unique gathering of the friends we hoped for was the tasteful variety of gracious architecture and the conspicuous caring for the most exquisite golf and tennis facilities we had seen. Add to this the Lowcountry lifestyle that each evening welcomes the stars with sunsets so spectacular that social gatherings and dinner parties throughout the plantation pause to witness. Bingo."

Our Members

"What drew us to Colleton River originally was Paul’s passion for golf and, like so many couples, one wonders what the non-golfing spouse will do in a community with 45 holes to play year-round.

Within a few months of moving here, Phyllis quickly immersed herself in many of the volunteer opportunities she was previously involved with in Pennsylvania and Arkansas, signed up for many of the limitless fitness classes and participated in the continuing learning opportunities.

We both found the community accommodated our lifestyle interests perfectly. Our days fill quickly, we love to venture out and explore the rich history of the area and we’ve discovered how much our family and friends enjoy visiting us here. The most pleasing element of our decision to call Colleton home has to be the friendships we’ve gained with such extraordinary people."

Championship Golf

"We bought a home in Colleton River in 2001 with the intent of eventually making it our full time residence. Until then, we visit as frequently as possible.

We find the staff to be very accommodating in arranging golf games for us but particularly enjoy the opportunity to play with the regularly scheduled drop-in groups. We always find a game and it’s a great way to meet new friends. The groups vary by handicap and everyone is welcome.

We look forward to those occasions when we get to our Colleton home from Chicago but for now, we have the best of both worlds."

Community Dock

"Colleton River’s community dock is a wonderful amenity because of its deep water location and access to all sorts of water sports. It’s a great place to bring the kids and enjoy jet-skiing, have a picnic and meet up with friends.”

Lifestyle

"Like everyone initially entering Colleton River, we were struck by abundant wide vistas of marsh, trees, and water, ready member access to two expansive, premier golf courses, and the inviting environs of two lovely clubhouses. If the surroundings and amenities were all that was required to constitute a full life for us, Colleton River would have stood alone, but our experience of living here has daily demonstrated Colleton River offers a great deal more.

What truly distinguishes Colleton River for us is a membership community and lifestyle unlike any other. We have found the Colleton River membership to be an open and inviting group who welcome new members to participate in a variety of activities.

On any given day, our clubhouses are home to on-going art classes in oils and watercolors from beginners to advanced…three book clubs meeting monthly to discuss responses and share lunch…a Writer’s Roundtable gathering periodically to write and share together…bridge and canasta are weekly happenings…a History Breakfast Club meets to discuss historical events and opinions.

Finding a golf game for men or women is easy and comfortable, and if fishing is a passion, early morning finds a parade of golf carts headed to our lagoons with rods and reels. Exercise classes of every description abound, and golf teaching expertise and clinics are always on the schedule. In response to strong member support and interest, Colleton River’s member-based Lifelong Learning Group plans lectures and trips for members; in the 2009-2010 season programs will focus in part on the Gullah legacies and culture and the effects over-development are having on our beloved Lowcountry waters and ecology.

We have found living at Colleton River to be a full and exciting life."

Community Outreach

"The members of Colleton River have been extremely generous to Bluffton Self Help. They provide Easter baskets for needy children that are decorated and full of treats and educational toys.

At Christmas, the members adopted almost 100 children and provided toys for them. We also receive non perishable food items throughout the year and are extremely grateful for all that the members of Colleton River do for us."

Jenny Haney, Director
Bluffton Self Help

Community Outreach

"On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, I would like to thank the Colleton River Plantation Club for their continued generous support of our annual Parris Island Golf Tournament, held at the Legends of Parris Island Golf Club.

Since its inception in 2006, the very charitable staff and members of the Colleton River community have helped the Foundation raise much needed funds to provide need-based scholarships for the deserving children of Marines. Your annual contributions of golf equipment, lessons, and rounds of golf, along with your members' generous financial donations help us to continue our tradition of Honoring Marines by Educating Their Children.

Thank you so very much for your unwavering support of our Nation’s heroes. Our success will create the resources to provide life-changing financial aid for the children of Marines and Navy Corpsmen who serve alongside them. This would not be possible without the great help from the staff and members of the Colleton River Plantation Club."

Security

"Late in the evening on January 7th, my neighbor’s tree fell directly on my roof. Our Chief of Security, Jerry Leitner, personally responded. He arranged for a greenskeeper to come, remove most of the tree and secure my home. Chief Leitner remained until the early morning hours ensuring my property was safe from the elements. It is reassuring to know that Security is there for you when you need them."

Special Event Opportunities

"We had dinner at the Nicklaus Clubhouse on Friday and enjoyed beautiful views, wonderful food, and a very attentive staff. Your wine list is very complete and member pricing is attractive. Being a wine collector for many years, I appreciate quality wines and proper service technique.

Overall, Colleton met my expectations and I look forward to visiting with you again while the ultimate goal is to make Colleton my permanent home."

"With easy access to airports, cottage accommodations on-site, world-class golf, exquisite dining and with the recent addition of a fully equipped business and meeting center, Colleton River is ideal for business entertaining. My guests were awed with the beauty and unassuming elegance of Colleton River. They always ask how they get invited back."
